What to do in Antigua Guatemala

The climate is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit all year around, cooling in the mornings and the evenings.  We are 5,000 feet above sea level with a slightly rainy season from May to October. Antigua has many cafes, international restaurants, galleries and unique shops.  Everything is within easy walking distance from the hotel.

THE MOST POPULAR HISTORIC SITES:

Hotel Convento Picture in Antigua Guatemala

On a day tour you can visit Las Capuchinas convent, Santa Clara Convent, La Merced Church with its baroque facade.  (On the way to la Merced Church you go through the most famous historic site of Antigua, the Arch of Santa Catalina where its convent now   hosts the Hotel Convento Santa Catalina Virgen y Martir. You can't miss it.), San Francisco Church, the Cathedral and the   government palace. Please request a free map from the hotel to visit these monuments.

ACTIVITIES: During the month of March, at Easter time, we have Holy Week, also known as Semana Santa.  Antigua is known throughout the world as one of the most popular locations to celebrate Semana Santa, second only to the one in Seville, Spain. Every day there are processions, intricate mosaics made of colored sand, and dancing in the street. It is the biggest celebration of the year in Guatemala.

RESTAURANTS

EATING OUT: Antigua offers a wide variety of both international and Guatemalan cuisine.  You find Italian, French, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and more.  There are also a number of vegetarian restaurants. See The Gringo's Guide for a complete information about restaurants.

GUATEMALAN FOOD: In the same building as the Hotel Convento las Catalinas there is an excellent restaurant.

ITALIAN FOOD: Antigua offers a large selection of Italian restaurants, including the best pizza in the country at Quesos y Vinos, 5 Ave Norte No. 29.   Also, try El Capuchino Restaurant on 6 Ave South and 4 Street.

INTERNATIONAL FINE DINING: If you want to have a pleasant evening, El Sereno is a good choice with its fine and excellent quisine on 4 Ave Norte #16.

CAFES: For one of the best Guatemalan coffees, Cafe Opera is the best choice, on 6 Ave Norte #17.

BARS: There are several, some of them offer live music like Casbah . Mostly modern music and live bands.
